How much does a solar system cost in Cape Town in 2026?

13 October 2026

It's the first question everyone asks — and the internet is full of answers written by people who don't actually install solar. These are our real prices, from a working Cape Town installation business. Every figure below is a price we charge today.

The equipment: inverter and battery

The heart of any system is the hybrid inverter and the battery. In 2026, a well-known 5kW Luxpower hybrid inverter sells for around R11,700 excluding VAT, and a 5kW Deye hybrid inverter for around R15,300 excluding VAT. A premium SIGENERGY Sigenneo 5kW inverter with a built-in 6kWh battery is R40,680 excluding VAT — you're paying for an all-in-one unit, a 10-year warranty and a 48-hour swap-out guarantee.

Batteries are priced per kWh. A 10.65kWh Eenovance wall-mount battery is about R28,100 excluding VAT; a 5.12kWh Deye lithium battery about R15,000. Most family homes we install land between 5kWh and 16kWh of storage.

The panels

Panels are sold per watt. Our Enersol all-black panels sell at R2.60 per watt excluding VAT — a 550W panel works out to roughly R1,430. On SIGENERGY packages we fit Aiko NEOSTAR 545W all-black panels, which carry partial-shading technology for Cape Town's mixed roof lines.

A typical 5kW system carries 10–13 panels; an 8kW system around 16–18. At R800 per panel for mounting on any roof type, mounting is a predictable part of the quote rather than a surprise.

What it costs fully installed

Here's the honest number. A 5kW Luxpower system with a 5kWh battery and around 11 panels, fully installed — panels, mounting, cabling, DBs, protection, Certificate of Compliance and City of Cape Town SSEG registration included — comes to roughly R109,000 including VAT.

Stepping up to a SIGENERGY Sigenneo 5kW with 6kWh of storage and 12 Aiko panels, the same complete installation is around R150,000 including VAT. An 8kW Sigenneo with 15kWh of storage and 19 panels runs to roughly R241,000 including VAT.

These assume a standard cable run (about 10 metres from inverter to roof, and inverter to DB). Long cable runs, difficult roofs and three-phase supplies move the number — which is exactly why the only useful quote is one built around your own bill and your own roof.

What actually drives the price

Battery capacity is the biggest lever — every extra 5kWh of storage adds roughly R15,000–R30,000. Inverter brand is the second: entry-level Luxpower, mid-range Deye, premium SIGENERGY. After that it's panel count (set by your usage, not by what's on special) and your property: roof type, cable distances and whether you're on single or three phase.

Systems from 12kW upward we don't price from a website at all — we install a Qualitrack meter that logs your actual load profile for a few days, then design and quote from real data.
