R3.89 billion fund takes aim at South Africa's grid, gas and water problems

Airnergize Capital, the clean technology investment platform of New GX Capital, has reached the final close of its first fund at R3.89 billion. The investor group includes the Development Bank of Southern Africa (which committed R240 million), RMB Ventures, Standard Bank and Nedbank — South Africa's major commercial banks and its development finance institution in one vehicle.

The fund targets energy, gas and water infrastructure across South Africa and selected African markets: solar and battery storage, wind, gas-to-power, and water and wastewater treatment — at commercial scale across industrial, municipal and rural environments.

Why this matters for solar

The fund's first deployments are going into commercial and industrial solar and battery storage assets already operating in South Africa, sub-Saharan Africa and the Indian Ocean islands. In other words: the country's biggest financial institutions are putting billions behind exactly the technology we install.

The context is the grid itself. New generation is now being built faster than the grid can carry it — until thousands of kilometres of new transmission lines are built, much of that investment is trapped. For homes and businesses, that means relying on the grid alone remains a risk, and generating your own power with battery storage remains the most direct way to fix your electricity costs.

What it means for you

Institutional money at this scale signals long-term confidence in solar and storage in South Africa. Equipment supply chains, finance options and installer capacity all benefit when capital flows into the sector.
