MyBroadband reports that Eskom has launched its first publicly accessible EV charging stations at Gateway Theatre of Shopping in Umhlanga and The Pavilion Shopping Centre in Durban. The launch took place on 12 October 2026.
AC and DC charging
The report describes stations with two 120kW DC charging guns and a 22kW AC port. Reported launch rates are R5.88/kWh for DC and R4.71/kWh for AC. Check the operator’s current rates and conditions before charging; actual charging speed also depends on the vehicle and station load.
What this means for charging at home
Public chargers serve journeys and shopping stops. A home or workplace charger serves the place your car spends most of its time. Integrating charging with rooftop solar can use your daytime generation, subject to the system’s capacity, your parking schedule and load-management design.
Can your car power your house?
SigenStor offers an optional DC charging module with bidirectional vehicle-to-home potential. This is not a feature of every EV or ordinary AC charger: the exact vehicle must support power export, and the equipment, software, manufacturer support and local requirements must be checked. Cape Town Solar confirms compatibility before offering a vehicle-to-home installation.
